Dennis J. Dietzen, Ph.D., Director
The Hematology section of the Core Laboratory at St. Louis Children’s Hospital performs testing in the areas of complete blood counts (CBC’s), routine coagulation, urinalysis, body fluid analysis, and cellular identification utilizing stat-of-the-art equipment. The lab is experienced in processing small volume specimens from infants and young children. The lab offers basic evaluation of bleeding disorders by performing protimes (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fibrinogen, and fibrin degradation products (FDP), and platelet function analysis. The lab rapidly and accurately provides identification of cellular components, crystals, and pathogens in urine sediment. Red blood cell and nucleated cell counts are performed on all types of body fluids. The lab has a wealth of expertise in the interpretation of cellular constituents of blood and body fluids aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad array of conditions including sickle cell anemia, hematologic malignancies, and meningitis. Specialized tests offered include qualitative G6PD, Heinz body identification, and APT determination. The lab is a regional referral center for APT testing, which is a qualitative test to determine if blood present in a specimen is of infant or maternal origin.
